You are so brave. I tried it years ago. My hair just did not do right! Slave to the crack perm forever I guess! Jacqui

I hear you cuz. I hope that this turns out the way I want. I plan to go through with it, although I see a nice perm sometimes and my mouth waters….thinking of the times when my hair was long.
But, we don’t have a problem growing hair in our family.

How did you get your hair like that? What method did you use, what shampoo and conditioner did you use? Did you use straws or curl rods?

Those pictures aren’t of me. Those are just hairstyles that I like. Sorry. If you google natural hairstyles most of those pictures will come up, and you will probably be able to find out what they did.

I transitioned for 6 months before I did the big chop. I used cream of nature shampoo, and once a week I would deep condition with Olive Oil paks. They are sold in beauty supply stores, as well as Target and grocery stores. It’s a yellow pack. That does wonders on your hair. It made it so soft and smooth, and easy to comb. That helped since I was wearing braid outs during my transition process.
A lot of people suggested I use Carol’s Daughter. I use her shampoo once in a while, but some of her products dry my hair out. Make sure you condition it a lot. That is going to help soften the natural hair.
Now that I am natural I have been trying different things. I currently use Kinky Curly curling custard, and I am getting ready to try Oyin Handmade products. You might want to google them. I hear so much good stuff about their products.
I hope this helps.
How are you currently wearing your hair?

love the photos. I’ve been “natural” for two years and I’m happy with the results. It’s taken some work, trial and error. I’m in a household of three women and we all have different hair types. I’ve had two cuts and now I think I’m ready to go for length. I’ll never go back to perming. When I want it straight, I use a maxiglide – it doesn’t seem like it should work for black hair, but it’s awesome. Thanks for the awesome site.

Thank you for stopping by. I am also enjoying being natural and will NEVER go back. I love my natural hair! It had been challenging at times, but well worth it!
I might have to check out the Maxiglide!

i wish I understood why it’s so diffucult for us to accept our God given hair. We see clearly why and how we were “brainwashed/taught/institutionalized” into not loving our selves. Once we know taht we should want to break free.
1. make the decision.
2. chop it short. this is the fastest for immediate liberation. (I wore braids for a year, cornrows micros you name it. Once I got to a few inces of new growth I said bye bye and never looked back)
3. keep it conditioned and trimemed.
4. Just let your hair be, don’t try to over control it.
5. Trust your face. When it’s a bad hair day I tell myself I’m beautiful then twist it, pony it, let the frizz fly, cover it with a hat or scarf and keep it moving.
6. play with it, get to know it. don’t believe for one second there are rules you have to follow or certain styles you cannnot try. Take this time to become an individual. Start by getting out of the shower adding a light moisturizer then doing NOTHING. next step is running to the store for ice cream with your hair as is!!!! then discovering clothes and make-up to accent your bold new look
7. Freedom. you are free to be you and free to love any texture or type of hair that is on your head this also means breaking out the flat iron if you want.

I agree with you 100%. Once I made the decision to go natural, I didn’t look back. I wore my hair in a twist out for 6 months while I transitioned. When I did the big chop I had less than 2 inches of hair. A year later I now have close to 8 inches. I love my natural hair, and I am excited about the journey that we are on!

You are so right. I have been natural for 2 years and it is so liberating..I love my hair and I think this fits my face more than any style I have ever worn. I chopped off 12 inches and have no regrets. It growns really fast and my hair is soft. I love it!!

I don’t have any regrets either. Mine is growing fast, and the best part is that it’s healthy!! Love that!

I went natural the first week of August 2010. I cut it to 1 inch. It is now about 3 inches and I love it. I love trying different styles and techniques to create so many looks. Once a week I do a condition wash, twist and allow it to air dry. The twist outs are so cute. Add a headband and it wonderful. There is no reason to go back to permed hair. Natural beauty is wonderful.

I currently wear my hair in twist outs. love them. I have been wearing headbands, but I am trying to get away from that because it has started
thinning my edges from being pulled back.
I love it though! I am ready to try some new styles! Gotta hit up YouTube!

I have been natural for 1 1/2 years. I have kept my hair in braids and it has grown much. I am just learning to embrace my natural hair. I do enjoy being able to do various things however I have always been a low maintenance hair care person. I hae never wanted to fool with my hair. Now I am working at change and becoming bolder with my natural hair and its styles. Is there a place to go and create beautiful styles? I am also attempting to teach my two young girls to do the same but they aren’t adjusting well. That’s fine…I’m not letting go.
I love the styles you have here. I need instructions on how to do them and the names of them.
Blessing!!!

Well, girls I guess I’m an oldie here. At 53 I’ve been wearing my natural hair since my mother (a hair dresser) chopped it all off the summer I turned 19. I had left home for college and went back to visit her. She took one look at my frizzled perm which I had not taken care of AT ALL, rolled her eyes and shaved my head. It was wonderful. I was a dancer and it was great to sweat and not worry about my hair, to go out in rain and humidity and not worry about my hair, to live my life and *not worry about my hair*. Enjoy the freedom girls.

Hi I made the decision to never have a perm again. It has been 3 months since I have had a perm and I am getting really nervous. I keep clipping my ends and uses all types of moisturizers, hair lotions. I am starting to see my roots come in and getting really excited and anxious. Some of these hairstyles here I really wants to try them. I purchased a hooded hair dryer so I can experiment. I don’t want to do a big chop but I do wants to keep my hair braided either micros or cornrows.

@KikiChere when I transitioned I didn’t want to do a big chop, but as my natural hair grew in, I got tired of dealing with the two textures, so I did the BC. You have to do what works for you. My transition hair style was a braid out. Easy to do, and lasted a week or so. I loved it!

I’m trying to go from relaxed to natural what is the best way ,d I love the hairstyles that are posted.
hersandhers
December 28, 2011 at 5:55 pm
@Angela there are a few ways. If you are bold enough you can just do the big chop and cut all the relaxed hair off.
I wasn’t so bold, so I transitioned. As the natural hair came in I would trim an inch or so of the relaxed hair off. As the natural hair grew I would wear a braid out. I would wash and condition my hair, part it to make corn rows going to the back. I would out gel on each section, then braid it. The next morning I unbraided it and hand fluffed it.
After about 3 months I got tired of dealing with the two textures, so I cut off the relaxed hair.
The other thing you can do is wear it in braids or twists until the relaxed hair is gone…trimming off the relaxed hair as you go.
Hope that helps!

@theresa thanks for the comment. What you said makes sense. My thought on it is that you have to see the beauty in your hair. For so long we have been brain washed to believe that if it isn’t straight it isn’t beautiful. That just isn’t the case. In order to feel beautiful with it, you must learn to embrace your natural hair.
Are you afraid of what the blacks on your job will say, or the whites?
When I did the big chop I couldn’t wait to get to work to show off my hair. For the most part all comments were negative. The white people are always so amazed by what I can do with my hair…how versatile natural hair is. Another woman had a problem with her boss because she went natural. She ended up wearing wigs until she retired. That wouldn’t have been me, because we would have been in court. That is a form of discrimination…trying to tell me how I can’t wear my hair?!!! No way!
Do you wear your hair out in its natural state when not at work?

Hi!! I have a photo shoot coming up this weekend & I was looking for some cute/photo worthy hairstyles. I’ve been natural a little more than a year and have a medium sized fro. I was wondering, how did the woman in this —> http://hersandhers.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/strawset.jpg?w=276&h=300 picture style her hair that way?

@ Ellen Thanks for stopping by. Here is the link for that hairstyle. http://thirstyroots.com/galleries/black-hairstyles-straw-set/6e24c2e90she does not state how she did it, but if you go to YouTube and put in straw set for natural hair, I am sure they will have plenty videos. I hope this helps!
