Butterfly in the sky
I can go twice as high
Take a look
It’s in a book
A Reading Rainbow
I can go anywhere
Friends to know
And ways to grow
A Reading Rainbow
I can be anything
Take a look
It’s in a book
A Reading Rainbow
A Reading Rainbow
Those are the lyrics from one of my favorite tv shows as a kid…Reading Rainbow. I was 11 years old when the show started, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I have been reading since I was 4 years old, and books have always been magical to me. I felt like they transported me to places that I might never see. I could get lost in a book for hours.
When the whole e-reader craze started I vowed that I would NEVER jump on the bandwagon. I love the feel of books in my hand too much to read on an e-reader. But, here I am!
I purchased a Nook Tablet this weekend, and I must say that I love it! I know that it could never replace the feel of holding a book, but I think it works when I travel and things of that nature. I am going on a cruise for my 40th birthday, so I can have my books with me to read.
I love the fact that I can search the web, read my blog, listen to Pandora, all without taking out my MacBook!
In the photo above is my Nook and the journal that I won in a contest on Oprah’s website. So, I have started journaling again thanks to Oprah.
Do you have an e-reader or do you prefer to read a regular book?
Peace and blessings,
Michelle

I don’t think it’s an either or kind of question. I will read in anyway that I can get. I love the feel real books, and you can’t really interact with an e-reader in the same way that you can with a book. It isn’t as easy to flip ahead to find when the next chapter ends to find a great stopping place. You can’t really appreciate the effort that goes into a great cover or a well-thought out book design on an e-reader. Not yet anyway. But, with my Kindle I can take a whole library with me whereever I go. This used to be my usual travel ritual. Take the book that I’m currently in the middle of, plus another in case I finish the first, and maybe another in case I start #2 and don’t like it. Then, if I don’t like either of those, grab some mass market paperback in the airport. That’s a lot of luggage room that I could be using for shoes! Anyway, I think that e-readers fill a niche in my reading life in a way that is important to me. I prefer to have all my options.
Thoughtful post,
Enjoy your cruise!

@Alicia I agree with you wholeheartedly! Nothing like holding a book in your hands. I feel the same about magazines. I did a free trial of O magazine on the Nook and I don’t like it. I will stick to a regular subscription for the mags.

@Yolanda Thanks for stopping by. Now that I have the Nook I have to learn to divide my time between my “real” books. I have so many that I haven’t read. I will catch up one day.

I only check books out from the library. I like having a time-frame on how long I can have the book. I am sure Cheryl will get a tablet but she isnt much of a reader, it will be lighter than her laptop. I am glad you are enjoying your new toy.

@Jackie I still love the library also. I just went there earlier this week. Now I get books on tape to listen to at work since we now have a no cell phone policy. They help get me through the day. Nothing like a good book.
What have you read lately?

First, I would like to say I love Reading Rainbow and think that they should put it back on air. I sing the theme song to my daughters all the time.
Now to answer your question I don’t have an ereader but I would like to purchase one. I will never get rid of my books because they are timeless. If my nook, computer or their site gets hacked and I loose my books I can’t share or reread that book. The paper book I can share/tetras anytime w/o electricity, Internet or computer.
I do enjoy reading my books, magazines, newspapers, etc on Kobo and my other book sites on my iPod it is cheaper and convenient for traveling and waiting.
All that being said I’m in agreeance with you I love to read my paper books but I also enjoy modern technology for entertainment and convenience purposes.

@nkanyezi thank you for your post. I am always happy to “meet” other lovers of books. I have met some folks who say they haven’t read a book in years. That is so sad to me.
I have the Kobo app, but I have never used it. I need to try it out.
I definitely agree that they should bring Reading Rainbow back!!! Maybe we should start a campaign.
